The Ultimate Guide to the Pomodoro Technique

Hacking Your Focus

The Pomodoro Technique, invented by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a Pomodoro.

How to Execute a Perfect Pomodoro

  1. Decide on the task to be done.
  2. Set the pomodoro timer (typically for 25 minutes). You can use our Pomodoro Timer tool.
  3. Work on the task until the timer rings. If a distraction pops into your head, write it down, but immediately return to your task.
  4. Take a short 5-minute break. Step away from your desk.
  5. After four pomodoros, take a longer break (15-30 minutes).

The effectiveness lies in the forced breaks, which prevent mental fatigue, and the gamification of work, which combats procrastination.
