The Ultimate Guide to the Pomodoro Technique
Hacking Your Focus
The Pomodoro Technique, invented by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a Pomodoro.
How to Execute a Perfect Pomodoro
- Decide on the task to be done.
- Set the pomodoro timer (typically for 25 minutes). You can use our Pomodoro Timer tool.
- Work on the task until the timer rings. If a distraction pops into your head, write it down, but immediately return to your task.
- Take a short 5-minute break. Step away from your desk.
- After four pomodoros, take a longer break (15-30 minutes).
The effectiveness lies in the forced breaks, which prevent mental fatigue, and the gamification of work, which combats procrastination.
